“Not many people love coming to work every day, and I do,” Superintendent Lucille Iconis said. “It’s a wonderful feeling.”
It’s clear that Mrs. Iconis is thrilled to have the position of superintendent based on her beaming smile alone. Her passion for her work has contributed to her achievements as an educator, principal, and assistant Superintendent, and now will ensure her continued success as Superintendent of the Massapequa School District.
Mrs. Iconis was officially sworn in on July 9 after Superintendent Mr. Charles V. Sulc retired from the position after forty-four years of service. Massapequa is lucky to have been led by Mr. Sulc, and thankfully, this high degree of leadership will continue through his successor.
The Massapequa community is excited to see Mrs. Iconis start her next chapter as Superintendent. “Mrs. Iconis is an accomplished educator and a warm and giving person. I know she will move the district in a… positive direction,” Principal Dr. Barbara Williams said.
To get to Mrs. Iconis’ level of accomplishment, it takes many years of hard work and dedication. She began her career as an elementary school teacher in Franklin Square. After teaching several grade levels, she was asked to be the district reading coordinator where she coordinated reading programs for the elementary schools, a position very special for Mrs. Iconis, as it began her career as an administrator.
“My entire career has been in teaching, learning, and curriculum; all my loves,” Mrs. Iconis remarked.
Although Mrs. Iconis is never one to boast about her achievements, she has already made tremendous strides in the district. For example, she created a full day kindergarten program as well as strengthened the district’s literacy and technology programs. Furthermore, she started several Special Education programs that emphasized tolerance and acceptance. “The feeling that everyone can belong… [is] probably what I’m most proud of,” Mrs. Iconis said.
As Superintendent, Mrs. Iconis hopes to see that the district continues to provide many opportunities for its students, not just in the classroom setting, but in the arts and sports as well. “My goal is to maintain the wonderful programs [that we have] and to grow them,” Mrs. Iconis said.
Mrs. Iconis believes that students should have more of a say and control over their own learning, especially in today’s career oriented society. While it’s important for students to have a taste of every subject, she feels that “less is more.” Rather, they should be exposed to more courses related to their career interests. Massapequa’s Academy Program, in which students have the ability to participate in internships and attend workshops related to their specific field of study, is a wonderful opportunity for students to grow.
More than anything, Mrs. Iconis believes that it’s the kind people of Massapequa who make the community so wonderful. She believes that they hold the key for success. “We have a great district here,” Mrs. Iconis said. “I just want to make a good place even better.”
