On Friday, February 1, Massapequa High School hosted the first annual “Massapequa’s Got Talent” competition. The show featured fifteen different acts. The competition was enormously successful thanks to the panel of judges who provided a great deal of insight and feedback to the performers, energetic hosts who kept the show moving at a great pace, and a live text-to-vote system.
Many of the acts displayed the vast amount of musical talent that Massapequa students have; the acts ranged from a vocal duet to a punk-rock band and also included numerous vocal soloists and group performances. Several entertainers in the show performed original pieces that wowed both the audience and the judges.
However, music was not the only form of talent that the competition showcased. The show also included the reading of an original short story by junior Ryan Schulte. The story kept the audience extremely entertained and it certainly showed the great assortment of talent that Massapequa has to offer.
Although it was entertaining to watch all the acts, the winner of the show needed to be determined. The panel of judges narrowed the competition down to the top five participants, but after that, it was up to the audience to decide who would win via a live-text-vote.
Audience members were turning their heads back and forth from one act to the next as people texted their votes in. Just when it seemed like one act would win, a surge of votes would come in, pushing another act up to first place. Finally, the winner became clear. Adam Davi, Brittney Garcia and Jennifer Enochs won the competition with their incredible performance of “New York State of Mind” by Billy Joel. The act featured senior Adam Davi on saxophone, junior Brittney Garcia on piano and junior Jennifer Enochs on vocals.
“We picked the perfect song and worked very hard to make it the best we could. It was a lot of fun and our hard work paid off,” Davi said.
Though Adam, Brittney, and Jennifer’s group reigned supreme, all of the performances thoroughly impressed both audience members and judges alike. If nothing else, this show proved what many were already aware of: Massapequa’s got talent!
