The Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh tournament held by Karan Chhatpar in the Bar Harbour Library every other month is a great event for people who enjoy card games. Whether they are competitive or not, it’s a place where people can meet and have fun.
The tournament contains mostly kids playing Yu-Gi-Oh. The prize for winning a duel against one of your peers is one of his best cards. Many would think that there would be tension between players due to such a high stake, however, that is not the case. “When a kid loses at the tournament there are never any arguments or hate between the players, even when the loser gives up one of their cards,” Karan said. “Everyone at the tournament is friends and respects one another.”
Although children of all ages attend the tournament, most participants are between the ages of ten and twenty-two, according to Karan. Participants are also able to enjoy pizza and refreshments at the events, since the meetings are held around dinner time.
“The tournament isn’t just fun for the kids that play the card games,” said long-time participant Brett Murphy.” “It can also be enjoyable to sit there and watch your friends have card battles and talk to one another and eat something while you are at it.”
Even with all the food, friends and fun, the tournament never gets too rowdy for the library. “The kids that come to the tournament are some of the most well-behaved, courteous, and kind people you will ever meet,” librarian Pamela Pattwell said.
Not only is the event a fun time for card players and snackers, it’s an excellent opportunity to get involved with peers and socialize! Stop by the Bar Harbour Library, or ask Karan Chhatpar for the date of the next meeting.
