The annual Dig Pink girls volleyball game managed to raise $585 this year for patients.

October 27 was a day full of pink for Massapequa High School girls’ volleyball team.  Both the varsity team, coached by Carol Ann Habeeb-Kiel, and the junior varsity team competed against Syosset High School, with the goal to raise money for the Side-Out Foundation.  This eighth annual “Dig Pink” event was packed with those supporting Massapequa girls’ volleyball, and the fight to cure cancer.

Both the JV and varsity teams won all three games in each set, exciting those who came to support the good cause: The scores of the JV match were 25-22, 26-24, and 25-14, and the varsity scores were 25-12, 25-10, and 25-10.  Not only did they fight hard to win, but they also fought hard to raise awareness to breast cancer, which affects millions of people a year.

This fundraiser was accompanied with raffles, a volleyball clothing sale, a bake sale, and pink cotton candy.  Along with an appearance made by four local politicians, the sixth grade Mckenna Elementary School choir performed the national anthem and “Fight Song.”  There were also performances by the Chiefettes and Massapequa Cheerleaders.

“It’s a great fundraiser where I get to do something I love and help raise money for cancer,” senior varsity player Nicole Furka said.

Awareness for Breast Cancer was furthered heightened during the “Stand Up For Cancer” moment of remembrance.  This ceremony included the exchange of carnations between Massapequa and Syosset volleyball players, while Massapequa players and attendees held up the names of people who have fought against cancer.  A moment of silence followed to honor those names, and all those who have fought cancer.

About one in eight women, and one in one thousand men, will develop breast cancer over the course of their lives.  “Together we can change those odds and celebrate more birthdays,” varsity coach Carol Ann Habeeb-Kiel said during her touching speech.

This “Dig Pink” event helped raise $585.00, which goes toward a clinical trial specifically for patients with stage 4 breast cancer.  It was nice to see Massapequa win its games, but most of all, it was nice to see everyone taking a step towards helping those suffering from cancer.
