The Varsity and Junior Varsity Girls Volleyball teams played East Meadow in the annual Dig Pink Fundraiser for breast cancer awareness on Friday, October 19,. The Chiefs overpowered East Meadow with the scores of 25-11, 25-13, and 25-12.
However, the score of the game was insignificant for the team. “The fact that we are able to play a game we love and help support a cause not only for the community but for the nation is big,” said two year-varsity player Katie Vedilago. Winning the match was incomparable to the amount of support the Dig Pink fundraiser received; this past week MHS has been swathed with pink for breast cancer awareness.
The gym was filled with a sea of pink supporting breast cancer appreciation. Every poster in the stands was collected and posted on the walls of the gym. The walls were filled with posters showcasing the number of people who have gone through the disease in addition to supporting team members and breast cancer awareness.
The fans showed a vast amount of “Think Pink” pride throughout the night. Many were dressed in the symbolic color pink. To add to the overflowing sea of pink, many fans held pink pom-poms and other pink items that were tossed into the crowd.
The fans cheered the whole night as the MHS Chiefettes, MHS Cheerleaders, and McKenna Show Choir performed. Many donated by purchasing pink-colored baked goods, raffle tickets, cotton candy, and t-shirts in the gym lobby. All purchases made by the fans were added to the total amount collected. “I don’t know the exact amount collected right now, but so far the Coaches versus Cancer Coin Challenge has raised about $1,200 and counting,” said Coach Habeeb. The amount of money collected is what makes Massapequa High School a standout for fundraising in worthy causes.
As a pregame ceremony, the Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity Volleyball teams lined up across the court from the East Meadow team. The Massapequa Varsity team handed flowers to each player of the East Meadow team as a kind gesture of appreciation and positive reception.
The Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity volleyball teams were not the only teams participating in the Dig Pink fundraiser. The boys and girls Cross Country Team, Boys Volleyball Team, Girls Tennis, Girls JV Soccer, Boys Football, Girls Field Hockey, and the Girls Swimming and Diving Team all participated in Think Pink festivities as well.
As the weekend came to an end, many players from each of these teams united with thousands of Breast Cancer Awareness supporters at Jones Beach for the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. Players, coaches and fans all walked side by side to support breast cancer awareness, wearing the same symbolic color as they all “Digged Pink.”
