Chants and attire of pure blue and gold could be seen and heard on Chief turf on Saturday, September 24. It was the 2011 Homecoming game and the Chiefs certainly did come home.
The marching band, the Chiefettes, and the cheerleaders came together to get the crowd riled up as the Chiefs came out to play against the previously undefeated Baldwin Bruins. As always, the band played their annual rendition of the National Anthem before the game commenced.
“We all worked hard throughout the game and the week leading up to the game and it really showed yesterday”, said Chiefs center Tim Duerr.
TheChiefs pulled off a victory with a final score of 28-14, dominating against Baldwin and gaining half of Massapequa’s total score in the first quarter alone.
Vassili Grigorakos may have been the MVP of the game with a total of 122 rushing yards in 18 attempts, two receptions for 13 yards, and one of the four touchdowns. Quarterback, Matt Pagano had seven receptions totaling 105 yards and an impressive interception. Pagano also had eight carries totaling for an extraordinary 51 rushing yards, and one touchdown.
Co-captain and defensive lineman Anthony Turano played an impressive defense withthree sacks on the Bruins’ quarterback, and a total of seven tackles throughout the game.
Wide receivers Dan Muller and Harry Lowe gained 92 yards in total – Muller having one of the four touchdowns. Finally, Jack Korber who had seven rushing attempts, totaling 48 yards, scored the final touchdown.
The Chiefs swept in the first quarter gaining two touchdowns, only to gain one more in the second quarter and the final one in the third quarter. The win generated by the powerful team created the first loss for the Baldwin Bruins and tied both teams records at 2-1.
“The whole team felt a sense of accomplishment because we knew Baldwin was a tough team and after winning as well as we did, it made us confident that we could be a big contender in our conference,” Duerr said.
2011 has already proved to be another successful year for the Chiefs; school spirit was contagious as the team put up a great performance and took home the victory, walking off the field with the first win of the year.
The Chiefs play their next game against Freeport.
