“Mr. Who?” or “Mr. What?” is the answer you would most likely get if you asked someone about Mr. Massapequa at MHS. So, what exactly is Mr. Massapequa all about?
“Mr. Massapequa [is] a spoof of Miss America,” Class of 2014 Advisor Ms. Nicole Zappulla said.
This contest is limited to boys only, and they either have to nominate themselves or have someone else nominate them in order to participate. There is a talent portion of the competition in which the nominees can choose to show off their special talents or simply perform a comedic act. For example, previous nominees have been known to dress up as girls, ride unicycles, or showcase other talents such as playing the piano or singing.
“It was always so fun,” said former MHS student Kyle Sanders, “and I was so upset when they didn’t do it my senior year.”
Many people were disappointed when Mr. Massapequa was abruptly canceled two years ago. “The boys nominated did not take the deadline seriously,” Ms. Zappulla said. Additionally, students did not follow through with their nominations, handled paperwork poorly, and were not showing enough enthusiasm.
Thankfully, students can expect to see this event this year. It’s a great way for one to get involved with the school community and show his school spirit.
“I’ve heard that Mr. Massapequa was a really fun event,” sophomore Keely Sanders said. “I’m glad that it will be happening this year.”
Not only is Mr. Massapequa a fun event, but it also is a fundraiser for a great cause. Organizers of the event are currently not sure which charity the money raised will be donated to. In previous years, the Mr. Massapequa Pageant has donated to the “Make-A-Wish” foundation and to the senior class office.
Nominations will begin after the holidays, so start thinking of boys who really represent Massapequa in a positive way that you would like to nominate. The event is usually held in March, and tickets always sell out fast, so be sure to get them as soon as they’re on sale.
“I feel like in one night, you can walk into the gym and sense the unity of the school,” Ms. Zappulla said. “ Everyone in the room is proud to be part of Massapequa.”
