This year’s Super Bowl halftime show will feature artist Bruno Mars and rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Mars first emerged in early 2010 with his vocals featured on B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” and Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire” before he released his debut solo single “Just the Way You Are” that summer. He released his first album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, several months later. The album topped the Billboard 200 charts and had three top five singles. His second album, Unorthodox Jukebox, was released in 2012, which currently tops the Billboard 200 with three top five singles. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have earned one top five single, “Under the Bridge,” on the Billboard Hot 100 along with another song, “Dani California,” reaching number six since their formation in 1983 according to Billboard.
The announcement of Mars’ performance in September came as a surprise to many fans, but they were even more surprised to hear that the Red Hot Chili Peppers would be performing with him due to the seemingly clashing nature of Mars’ and the band’s music.
“I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but I am extremely upset that Bruno Mars is performing with them because their music styles do not mix,” sophomore Alexa Shea said.
Still, some remain optimistic. “Bruno Mars is a great performer, and I’m sure he will put on a great show,” sophomore Brian Kirschner said. “With the help of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, it will be worth watching.”
While Bruno Mars and The Red Hot Chili Peppers are extremely popular now, they don’t have quite the same name as other past performers such Beyoncé, Madonna, or Michael Jackson. But maybe, this change is just what the Super Bowl halftime show needs.
“Although I love the others [past performers], I think I would prefer having someone new on board,” Women’s Choir teacher Mrs. Ilena Dempsey said. “ [Mars] brings a spicy flavor in his music that is contagious.”
Regardless of the concerns fans may have, Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers will certainly put on a show that will never be forgotten.
