Can you hear the joyful voices of the holiday cheer? No? Those who attended the holiday concert Wednesday and Thursday night sure could. The chorus and orchestra of MHS got together in the Baldwin Theater on December 18 and 19 to perform their holiday pieces that they’ve been working on since the beginning of the year.
“It’s a really fun night for everyone” said Taylor Hogan, a performer in the women’s choir. The orchestra, women’s choir and a capella choir all perform their own four pieces of music and then perform four more pieces together to end the show.
All the performers have their family members and even some friends in the audience. “Some people that don’t even have a family member in the concert attend” said Mrs. Dempsey, the women’s choir teacher. People enjoy the concert every year.
Before the concert, as the performers are getting ready to go on stage and all the audience members are waiting for the concert to begin, there is a select choir of about fifteen girls are caroling Christmas songs out in the main lobby. “They all have beautiful voices,” one of the audience members said. “It’s really lovely to listen to.”
On Wednesday night, the whole concert happens and then everyone goes, but Thursday night runs a little differently. Thursday night is “alumni night” when all the previous MHS students who were in chorus or orchestra that graduated come up on stage and sing “Hallelujah” with the performers who just previously sang that song. “It’s so fun” MHS alum Kevin Stallone, a former member of the a capella choir, said. Even Mrs. Dempsey’s father and husband come up because they were previous members of the MHS music program.
After the concert, pictures are taken and flowers are received. The performers reunite with their family and head home; some people go out for a treat before going home, though. “My whole family is heading to Marshal’s Ice Cream Bar for some ice cream sundaes,” sophomore Brooke Elardo said. Everyone leaves in a joyful mood and is ready for the holidays.
