Daniel Murphy was one of the Mets’ most valuable assets this season.

One! Two! Three strikes, yer out!

The New York Mets are on the verge of losing two potential studs; Yoenis Cespedes and Daniel Murphy. Now, the Mets need a miracle to remain the strong team they were in the previous season .

The Mets need a solid hitter to stay on the roster for years to come. Yoenis Cespedes is a great power hitter and a solid left fielder, while Daniel Murphy should change his name to Jack— Jack of All Trades, that is. He is a consistent hitter and a top tier middle infielder.

With the New York Mets fan base, there is no middle ground. Most fans either sport a pro-Cespedes attitude or a pro-Murphy attitude.

“I think  [Cespedes] is a good player and he has good traits,” senior Tyler Stankiewicz said.

With professional sports, experience and playing time are the best ways to improve. Murphy has currently been in the MLB for five years, as where Cespedes has been in for only three years. In Cespedes’ three years in the MLB, he’s already won two Home Run Derby competitions.

In some instances, chemistry is better than leadership and veteran status. In other instances the vice versa is better.

“[Cespedes] would do more and become one with this team,” Stankiewicz said.

The problem for the Mets is that regardless of who they sign, they are losing a crucial part of their batting order. With Murphy in the third spot and Cespedes batting clean-up, the Mets are going to need to fill the void.

“Between Murphy and Cespedes, I’d have to go with Murphy,” Senior Miles Kurgic said.

As of right now, the 2014-15 season showed that even though Cespedes can hit the long ball, Murphy drives in more runs. Also, Murphy will play up to three times more games a year than Cespedes will.

Everything comes down to money. Cespedes is currently making around $9M a year, as where Murphy is making $8M. Being that Cespedes is younger in the league, he’s most likely going to ask for anywhere from $100M-$150M for a five to six year contract. Murphy has the qualifications to ask for about a $40M over a four year contract.

“When the Mets spend money, look at what happens; they go to the World Series. Murphy deserves to have his career contract with the Mets,” Kurgic said.

The main question being asked by fans, teammates, coaches, and owners is this; who is going to produce the most runs and take us to the World Series again? After a five game World Series loss for the Mets, fans are waiting anxiously to see what moves the team managers, the Wilpons,  are going to make.
